Verne’s Novel “Around the World in 80 Days”.

Key Word: conflict, main character, novel
This research is focused on analyzing the conflict of the main character in
novel “Around the World in 80 Days” by Jules Verne. The objective of the
research is, to find out the external conflict and internal conflict that happened in
the main character in the novel.
The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method, and
source of data analysis has used Jules Verne‟s novel “Around the World in 80
Days” which was contain 239 pages with great illustrated classics. In collecting
the data, I used note taking for the instrument to collect the data from literary
work and used comprehensive reading for understanding the conflict in collecting
the data. This research used intrinsic approach and structuralism theory by
Shirova on analyzing the data that classify the data into two kinds, they are
external conflict and internal conflict.
Based on the data analysis, I found five internal conflicts and twenty five
external conflicts that happened in main character in this novel. The internal
conflict occurred in Mr. Phileas Fogg as the main character, it was about his feel
and what he thought in his mind. Then, external conflict divided into two kinds,
social conflict and physical conflict. Social conflict happened between Fogg and
another character who make his journey become delay. Physical conflict is
conflict between character and the nature. In this story, Fogg met with some
disasters (typhoon and terrible storm) and another experience with the
environment and condition that make his journey become delay.
From the analysis, there is more external conflict than internal conflict.
On external conflict, there is more social conflict than physical conflict. Its all
influence the main character on his journey to be delay, although at the end the
main character success to around the world in 80 days.
