Abstract

ABSTRACT
Translation means transferring the message contained in the source language to the target language. student must master the translation aspect. One of them is that they must know the translation method. Because when they use the right translation method, they will have no difficulty in translating the English text. Therefore, it is also important for students to be able to translate the English text well because to answer the questions in English they need to translate the questions first before they answer the questions from the questions. This research aims to find out the student’s translation method and the reason they chose the method in translating process. Because when they use the right translation method, they will have no difficulty in translating the English text. Therefore, it is also important for students to be able to translate the English text well because to answer the questions in English they need to translate the questions first before they answer the questions from the questions.
The method of this research was descriptive qualitative that is conducted to three students of class XI MIA 2 SMA Darussalam. The data collecting of this research was an interview and translation test. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and data verification/conclusion. The findings of this research showed that in the translation process carried out by three students of class XI MIA 2 SMA Darussalam, it can be concluded that there are three methods used in the process of translating the English text. The three kinds of methods are word for word translation, free translation and literal translation method. Students who use the word for word translation method because they only know how to translate all existing words and according to them this method is an easy way to use. Then, students who use free translation method, they say sometimes a sentence if only using the word for word method means sometimes it is not correct. For this reason, the translation will be easier to understand by using their own free language. And then students who use the free translation method say that the most important thing when translating is to understand the meaning even though they use free words. Based on this research, the researcher concluded that the teachers must provide knowledge to students about how to translate English texts well.
